THE HUMMINGBIRDS

When warm days come to bless our fields,
And gray skies are no more -
Once blooming trees have now set fruit,
As Robins, in the garden, explore.

I enjoy many moments in the glider,
Under a plum tree thick for shade -
I watch the Purple Martins return,
As other birds plan nests to be made.

The Sparrows are chirping and chattering,
As a mate they carefully choose -
They're on the ground! --- Up in the trees!
Like children, they delight and amuse.

Then the Finches fly in all a'flutter,
As thick as grass on the  hills -
You stare for a moment, as they turn the slope,
The color of the yellow daffodils.

SUDDENLY, I heard a commotion.
What WAS that sound I heard?
Around the feeder; there's two ... No three!
My word!  It's the Hummingbirds!

Tiny bodies of color and beauty,
Their wings we never see.
They are ever moving, so fast in flight,
A sudden movement, and off they flee.

Such a treasure to sit still and watch them,
At the time their arrival occurred.
A beauty no human can copy,
Is that, of the lovely Hummingbird.
